AboutTairyu-sanso

Located at the foot of Kyoto's Higashiyama mountains, Tairyu-sanso was first built in 1896 by Ijyuin Kanetsune, an entrepreneur from Kagoshima Prefecture.
It was later bought by Ichida Yaichiro, a kimono fabric dealer from Hikone, who extensively renovated its garden and building.
Its garden was renovated by Ogawa Jihei VII (also known as Ueji), a landscape gardener who is renowned as a pioneer of the modern Japanese garden.

Over Tairyu-sanso's vast 5,950㎡ grounds, he built a pond, stream, tea garden, waterfall arrangement, and lawn space.
Of this garden, whose scenery is continuous with the majestic Higashiyama mountains, the Keika rinsen-cho (Pictorial Collection of Gardens in the Imperial Capital) wrote in 1909 that, "it has an elegant artistry and the most painstaking effort can be seen in its structure," an indication of the high regard Tairyu-sanso has been held in ever since its renovation.
It was designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 1988.
Its architecture was built by Shimada Tokichi, who was known as the greatest carpenter of his generation, and was designated a national Important Cultural Property in 2024.

Tairyu-sanso has long been closed to the public but in autumn 2024 and January 2025 its garden and house were successively opened to public visitation.
The decision to open Tairyu-sanso was made in response to the adamant wish of Akio Nitori, founder and chairman of Nitori Holdings (Tairyu-sanso's current owner) for “Tairyu-sanso to be seen by as many people as possible.”

Tairyu-sanso also exhibits artwork from the Nitori Holdings Art Collections in different areas of the main building.

Be sure to enjoy this modern Japanese garden masterpiece and its precious and superior-quality modern Japanese architecture along with its artwork.
